Helrom
Precise service carbon footprint calculation for sustainable freight transportation

„Sustainable transportation requires not only innovative technology, but also full transparency about CO2 emissions. Our customers need certified, reliable values in order to achieve their own climate targets.
The detailed calculation of the service carbon footprint was therefore the next decisive step.”
Dr. Matthias Herrmann,
CFO at Helrom
Initial Situation

Helrom uses patented technology to enable the seamless transfer of truck trailers between road and rail – without a crane, terminal or trailer adaptations. In this way, the company reduces CO2-intensive road freight transport and facilitates the switch to climate-friendly transport alternatives.
Due to legal requirements such as the CSRD, many companies must accurately record the emissions of their entire value chain – including transport emissions – and require certified CO2 values from their transport service providers.
As a provider of climate-friendly rail transportation, Helrom delivers reliable emissions data to meet both customer requirements and its own sustainability reporting – based on the precisely calculated Service Carbon Footprint (SCF) for each route and each hub. However, the complex emissions calculation, which requires multiple sources and the application of standards such as ISO 14067 and ISO 14083, carries the risk of errors that can jeopardize competitiveness and regulatory compliance.

“With the increasing demand for reliable CO2 data in the transportation sector, we are facing a complex challenge. Without a clear methodology to identify emission-relevant processes, the calculation remains either incomplete or unnecessarily complicated.
A well-founded and robust analysis was the only way for us to provide our customers with precise values.”

Challenges
CO2 accounting presented Helrom with challenges, particularly when it came to defining the system boundaries: Which emissions are relevant?
The calculation of the Service Carbon Footprint (SCF) is fundamentally different from product assessments. Without in-depth knowledge of ISO 14067 and ISO 14083, errors can easily occur that lead to incorrect emission values – with a loss of trust and regulatory risks.
Data integration was also complex: emissions-relevant information came from various sources such as rail operators, energy suppliers and internal documentation. TELUSIO helped Helrom to convert this data into a consistent, ISO 14067-compliant calculation.
TELUSIO supported Helrom with a data collection workshop and intensive collaboration. The result: dynamic emissions modelling in accordance with ISO 14067, which enables optimizations and more precise calculations.
Complex system boundaries
The identification of relevant emission sources – from direct transportation emissions to upstream energy generation processes – is particularly complex in the case of services.
Diverse and fragmented data sources
Data on emission-relevant activities comes from different systems and must be merged consistently to enable a reliable calculation.
Individual calculation methodology required
A flexible and scalable solution was needed to accurately capture all relevant emission sources and enable future optimizations.
solution

What characterizes the collaboration?

Helrom has used TELUSIO to precisely calculate the service carbon footprint (SCF) of its transportation services. The solution maps Helrom’s specific transportation processes in detail and in compliance with ISO 14067. This provides Helrom with transparent and verifiable CO2 data for each route and uses it for sustainability reporting and climate strategy.
The adapted calculation model ensures that all routes and operating conditions are accurately mapped – important for customers, partners and regulatory requirements. Instead of making assumptions, Helrom relies on reliable, scientifically sound data that forms the basis for precise reporting and CO2 reduction measures.
With the Carbon Footprint service, Helrom is taking a decisive step towards a net-zero economy – systematically reducing emissions and improving its carbon footprint in the long term.

“Our mission is to make the transport sector more climate-friendly. With TELUSIO, we now have the opportunity to precisely quantify our emissions and identify optimization potential – a decisive step towards net zero.”

CFO at Helrom
What are the next steps in the collaboration?

Following the successful calculation of the Service Carbon Footprint (SCF) for 2024, Helrom and TELUSIO are working together to close any remaining data gaps in a targeted manner. The first reliable emission values are available, and optimization measures are already being implemented on this basis.
Helrom plans to continue developing the SCF over the coming years. Further transport routes are to be integrated from 2025. Thanks to the close cooperation with TELUSIO, the calculation is constantly being adapted in order to present the CO2 footprint more and more precisely.
This strengthens Helrom’s sustainability strategy and position as a pioneer in climate-friendly rail freight transport.
We look forward to further cooperation!

Precise analysis of complex value creation processes
Emission-relevant data points along the entire multimodal transport routes were identified in detail
Structured data integration
Different emission sources and fragmented data points were consistently merged
Transparent emissions balance
Scientifically sound methods ensure reliable emission values and enable future integration of real primary data
“Thanks to the precise calculation of our service carbon footprint, we not only have full transparency about our emissions, but also a solid basis for optimization measures and the sustainable expansion of our transport network.”
