“We only sent TELUSIO an unprocessed data print. Within 6 weeks, we had a product carbon footprint for our complex system.”

Facts about Bausch + Ströbel

Starting Position

Bausch + Ströbel is a mechanical engineering company manufacturing special machines primarily for the pharmaceutical industry. The machines are used to clean, sterilize, fill and label pharmaceutical products such as medicine bottles, ampoules, syringes, cartridges and injection vials.

Bausch+Ströbel has already been calculating and publishing their Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) for several years.

The next step in their sustainability strategy was to determine the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) for individual systems. The company was therefore looking for a solution provider that was able to determine the PCF for complex systems and could also offer a transparent and scientific approach.

Bausch+Ströbel itself had no time for a resource-intensive and lengthy familiarization with the calculation methodology and preparation of relevant master data. For instance, there were gaps in the master data (parts list information) in the ERP system. In order to ensure sufficient data quality, various ERP and CAD data often had to be exported and merged again.
This clearly indicated that the company needed a carbon accounting partner with whom an uncomplicated collaboration was guaranteed and who would also take care of data preparation and processing.

At the same time, great importance was given not only to obtaining the PCF as a key figure, but also to finding a way to automatically determine the PCF for other plants at the touch of a button in the future.

Challenges

Searching in vain for some time for a PCF solution for their complex systems
Improve master data quality (parts lists)
Manual, time-consuming and Excel-based quantification

TELUSIO provided the solution: the PCF results could be used just six weeks after the start of the project – without any in-house IT or sustainability resources.

With the results from TELUSIO, it is now possible, for instance, to directly view and analyze all relevant CO2 figures for articles, product groups, assemblies and materials at the touch of a button. This provides the data-based foundation for further developments in the development and design of new systems.

Additionally, the PCF report provided on the system can be issued to customers and other external stakeholders as a convincing tool in terms of sustainability.
Lastly, Bausch+Ströbel has full transparency on the quantification method. The PCF was determined in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol using the activity-based method. For this purpose, TELUSIO recorded the CO2 emissions from various activities and processes. This is based on numerous pieces of information from the bill of materials as well as from the manufacturing processes.

What characterizes the collaboration?

In addition to the uncomplicated cooperation, TELUSIO’s digitalization perspective is particularly convincing. TELUSIO presents a clear roadmap for the automation of PCF quantification so that the PCFs for all systems can be calculated automatically (and digitally) in the future.

“The comprehensible and clear path to automating PCF calculation for all our systems is very convincing. We look forward to working with TELUSIO on the further automation of this important topic.”
