To better understand the opportunities and challenges of the digital product passport in manufacturing, we are running a project on it with Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. We are pleased to be able to share the first findings here.

💡 Background:
The digital product passport is one of several European Commission initiatives for a sustainable Europe.

In March 2022, the European Commission presented a series of proposals to improve product sustainability. One of the most important initiatives is introducing a circular economy business model in the countries of the European Union.

However, all this is only part of an even larger initiative, the European Green Deal. The EU Green Deal is a plan for sustainable development and growth in Europe.

Under the Green Deal, CO2 emissions are to be reduced by 55% by 2030 compared with 1990. In addition, Europe is to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.

For this reason, the European Commission has proposed initiatives covering the entire life cycle of a product. The initiative aims to prevent waste and keep the materials used in the EU economy for as long as possible. The plan also targets product design, encourages circular economy practices and promotes sustainable consumption.

However, to obtain, use, store and retrieve all the necessary information, a solution must be at hand. And this is exactly where the product passport comes in.
